The Baltic Exchange provides this tool to help market participants compare alternative marine fuels on an energy-equivalent basis, supporting informed decisions in operations and compliance planning.

This reliable, easy-to-use fuel equivalence converter assists owners, traders, brokers, and charterers in understanding the physical properties of alternative marine fuels currently available on the market.

The converter enables users to compare the mass, volume, and energy content of different fuels in one place, in a simple and clear format. The output provides valuable information to operators and shipowners on how their bunker supplies would be affected by a switch in fuel, when aiming to achieve an equivalent energy level.

You can use the converter to determine the equivalent quantity of an alternative fuel in mass, volume, or energy terms, and compare this to the Baltic standard consumption in metric tonnes of  VLSFO consumption description of marine fuel oil (MFO) in tonnes per day.

This tool has been developed to function both as a standalone resource and in conjunction with other Baltic Exchange compliance cost calculators, including the EU ETS and FuelEU Maritime tools.

How It Helps

  • Quickly compare fuels on an energy-equivalent basis

  • See the impact of switching from conventional fuels to alternatives

  • Assess bunker requirements for compliance scenarios

  • Support decision-making alongside regulatory cost calculators

Fuel Equivalence Converter

Compare marine fuels by mass, volume, and energy content to understand the impact of switching to alternative fuels.

Note that these conversion estimates are based on the “Fuel Conversion Constants” listed here (link to constants page). The tool only provides high-level estimates and comparisons and should not be relied on for compliance or legal purposes.
