Carbon Emissions Benchmarking

To support the shipping industry's decarbonisation drive, the Baltic Exchange has calculated a set of indicative CO₂ emissions figures and Energy Efficiency Operational Indicator (EEOI) reference values. These figures cover the standard Baltic vessels operating on the various routes for which the Exchange provides spot freight assessments.

Over time, this benchmark is intended to serve as a valuable point of reference for the industry, enabling market participants to consider carbon emissions alongside charter rates. By understanding the variability in operating efficiency across vessel sizes and trade routes, both owners and charterers can make more informed decisions to reduce their carbon footprint.

At this stage, the values have been calculated based on typical vessel and voyage characteristics. Baltic Exchange members are encouraged to contribute feedback, share their own findings, and submit vessel operating performance data. This will enable the Baltic to validate, refine, and maintain the EEOI reference values and ensure that the benchmark remains accurate and relevant to the market.
